Tips for Moving

Packing & unpacking is never the most pleasant experience, so make sure you do as little of it as possible by following our tips for packing and storage.

We also welcome any additional moving tips that you would like to send us.

Tips for Packing

In order to pack optimally, try focussing on the end goal, namely unpacking. Avoid finding broken and rotten items when unpacking boxes after a long period of storage by following these helpful hints:

  • Be prepared: Make sure you have equipment such as tape, packing materials, markers, furniture covers, etc.
  • Categorise & label on more than one side. Set up an inventory as you pack to help keep track of all your belongings.
  • Use the right size containers - large boxes for light items and small boxes for heavy items.
  • Do not pack boxes that are too heavy for you to pick up.
  • 'This side up' for items that are fragile. Label clearly and visibly!
  • Wrap breakable items carefully in bubble wrap or towels and pad the box with wrapping paper.
  • Don't try and fit in too much into one box. This will make stacking them difficult.
  • Tape & label your boxes once you've finished with them.
  • Never pack damp or wet items as this will form mould and rot.

Tips for Storage

Storing your items can be stressful and may hold many surprises and problems you didn’t anticipate. This is why we've come up with an easy checklist to ensure that things go as smoothly as possible.

  • Plan ahead. What will you be storing, and do you have enough space for it? Frequently used items should be kept at the front of the unit.
  • Pack large items first. Fridges, stoves and large boxes should go at the back.  Smaller items can be packed in between or on top of larger items later, but not vice versa.
  • Start packing from the back to the front and from the bottom to the top.
  • Protect your goods by using strong containers with a lot of padding for crockery.  Use covers for tables, fridges & stoves.
  • Leave some space for movement in the storage unit, e.g. leave an aisle down the middle of your storage unit for easy access.
  • Make sure you don't end up with any empty containers applying a "fill it completely" attitude right from the start.
  • Optimize your space by breaking down furniture with removable legs and stacking chairs.
  • Multi-task. Use items such as drawers, refrigerators, and wardrobes to strore things in as well.
